Centennial Park Becomes
Downtown Destination
After years of planning, a once neglected downtown street corner has become a beautiful focal point, thanks to the efforts of the Civic League Garden Club.
Since October, 1982, when a fire destroyed the Belk Department Store, the corner of Second and Market Streets was vacant, and for almost 25 years the empty lot served as a makeshift parking lot. In 1998, club members began raising funds to purchase the corner lot, and in February, 2006, they donated the property to the town to be maintained as a green space.
Club members then organized a fund-raising drive, and through the generosity of many individuals and organizations, the club provided matching funds which allowed the Town of Cheraw to receive a state grant for the creation of Centennial Park.
Centennial Park was formally dedicated in a ceremony November 20. The park was presented to the town in recognition of the club's 100 years of service to Cheraw, and it will remain a testimony to the dedication of the Civic League Garden Club and its commitment to making Cheraw a better place to live.
