Taking It Outside

For Your Next Adventure, Take A Ride On The Wild Side

If you think mountain biking means packing up and heading to the Carolina mountains, think again. Located just off highway 1 south in Cheraw, the Cheraw State Park offers bike enthusiasts a mountain bike trail which contains 9.2 miles of twisting turns.

To get to the trail from Cheraw, drive south on US 1/52. From the point where US Highway 1 and US Highway 52 separate, drive two miles and turn right onto Auction Barn Road (S-13-170). The trailhead is on the left at a parking area with a large stump. Starting at the stump, follow the blue blazes in a clockwise direction. The trail is a predominately sandy surface which winds through a mixed forest of pines and hardwoods.

Because of the sandy content, this trail is a good one to encounter when conditions at other trails may be wet and muddy. The trail is not a very technical trail, but it is fast, with enough ups, downs and twisting turns to provide a good workout. Make sure to pay close attention to the trail markers because the trail does intersect with many unpaved roads. Keep a close watch for deer, wild turkeys, snakes and other wildlife during your ride. Insect repellant is recommended.

No facilities are available at the trail site, however restrooms, water and drink machines are available in the main park facility. Cheraw State Park is located at 100 State Park Road. For additional information, you may contact the Park Office at 843.537.9656 or toll-free at 800.868.9630.
