The Doctor Is In: Dr. Travis Novinger, M.D.
As a monthly feature of DiscoverCheraw.com, we will introduce you to one of Cheraw’s physicians from Chesterfield General Hospital, providing an insider’s look at their life.
When a child says, “That’s what I want to be when I grow up,” they recognize something, or someone, in a line of work that inspires them. Growing up, Dr. Travis Novinger looked up to the local Swansea High football team physician, Dr. Grainger. Travis was inspired by Dr. Grainger so much so that he knew he wanted to be a doctor in a small town.
Travis truly cares about people. He values friends, family and his faith. By including his faith in his practice he has made it his mission to reach people for Christ. There is growing recognition in medical literature of the important link between spirituality and health, and Travis uses opportunities to touch patients with the love of God without being pushy, forced or offensive. As well, Travis prays for his patients everyday.
After completing his residency at McLeod Family Medicine in Florence, SC, Travis’ first stop on his quest for a small town was Cheraw. According to his wife, Laurie, “We looked at other small South Carolina towns, but came back to Cheraw because we fell in love with it. It is a great place to raise a family.”
Travis and his wife, Laurie, have two children, Taylor and Abbey. Abbey attends St. David’s, and Taylor is in second grade at Cheraw Primary. Taylor is involved in youth sports and is by his Dad’s side for every Cheraw High football game, as Travis is the team physician. Dr. Novinger is not only giving his son someone to look up to, but also serving as an example to other children who may want to be just like him when they grow up.

• Attended USC School of Medicine in Columbia, from 1994 - 1999 where his received his M.D. degree
• Completed residency in 2002 through the McLeod Family Medicine program in Florence, SC
